The origin of Ideas into the Autobiographical and Biographical narrations

Two different beliefs exist in western culture. On the one hand, events are thought to be completely determined by their context in materialism and its approach to the history of culture. On the other originality and individualism are highlighted in idealism. Depending on the specific notion, the act of creation is expressed differently in the natural sciences as well as in the arts. In narration, one follows a line of thought and endevours to legitimise it.

Isaac Newton’s statement “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” is in contradiction with what he repeatedly said before he died, when he explained how his intuition of the law of universal gravitation was prompted by an apple falling on his head. From scientific discoveries to artistic creations, these are anecdotes about the origin of ideas. In the texts once used in primary schools, chance played a central role in discovering words. In narration, the knack of intuition is often a product of luck. Generating ideas or discovery implies nevertheless a complex process. Carl Jung defined intuition as "perception via the unconscious": intuition enables models of the reality hidden behind the facts to be identified (Psychological Types, 1921).

The notion of intuition appears in the earliest philosophical debates. From Plato to Aristotle until the modern and contemporary philosophies, intuition has often been cited as a means of accessing the transcendental, or, as in Kant, accessing the cognitive processes through aesthetics (from the Greek aisthànomai or «I perceive by intuition»).

The expression «to grab an idea» highlights how the instant of creation is perceived as fortuitous, as ephemeral.

There are countless examples of autobiographies and biographies on this topic: from Archimedes’ Eureka, to the fish tank in Via Panisperna where Enrico Fermi states that he first understood how the power of radioactivity could be harnessed.

In narrating these events, the incidence of chance is always strongly highlighted.

In artistic creations, the ‘lightning flash’ of intuition is often referred to as having originated from a dream or a vision. From Dante’s Vita Nova to Francisco Goya’s Pinturas Negras, the inspiration for a painting or work of art originates in a kind of magic instant. In Vita di Benvenuto di Maestro Giovanni Cellini Fiorentino , scritta, per lui medesimo, in Firenze (1558), the fusion of Perseus’s bronze statue is narrated by Benvenuto Cellini in an epic style.

Where do ideas come from? How do ideas originate? How does one recognize their  innovatory content? What are the circumstances of the moment of insight? To whom should the merit go? To what end is the description of intuitive thought harnessed in the autobiographical text ?

The scope of this Call for Papers is to analyse the rhetoric and the narrative construction of autobiographies and biographies dealing with the origin of ideas in any branch of knowledge.

In the specific context of autobiographies, the related bibliography is extensive both either in theoretical field and in the psychoanalytical one. There are a large number of autobiographies and biographies of scientists and artists narrating the instant of creation, the sparkle of an idea.

Film Synopsis

Island of Hope - Island of Tears, directed by Charles Guggenheim, 1989, 30’

ʺEllis Island, located in New York Harbor, served as a port of entry - between 1892-1954 - for millions of European immigrants hoping for a new life in America. Archival footage allows us to see some of those individuals who left their own homes with whatever they could carry.  Forging the ir way in a new land, they dreamed of opportunities. Government records show that nearly 15 million people - principally from Southern and Eastern Europe - passed through Ellis Island.  This clip includes footage of some of those immigrants as they explain why they wanted to come to the States. The gateway of Ellis Island originally covered about 3.3 acres.  Over the years, however, it expanded to 27.5 acres with the help of excess earth from the construction of New York City's subway (and other projects).  The first immigration station, built of wood, opened in 1892 and was destroyed by fire in 1897.  The second immigration station opened three years later. Before it became an immigration-processing facility, Ellis Island was known for its abundant oyster beds.  During the time that Dutch and English colonials occupied nearby territory, the place was known as "Oyster Island."  Local Native-Americans called it "Kioshk" (Gull Island).

A man named Samuel Ellis took control of the island in the 1770s.  Over the years, it would change from a sandy island (barely rising above the high-tide mark), to a place frequented by pirates, to a harbor fort (known as Gibson), to an immigration portal.

Ellis has been called both an "Island of Hope" and an "Island of Tears."  The government reports that about two percent of people trying to get into America, through Ellis Island, were denied entry. First opened to the public on a limited basis, in 1976, it has since undergone a major restoration (beginning in 1984).  The main building - now known as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum - was open to the public on the 10th of September, 1990.  About 2 million people visit Ellis Island every yearʺ.

Cesare deve morire, Paolo e Vittorio Taviani, 2012, 1h17’’

Testo tratto da:  https://www.berlinale.de/en/archiv/jahresarchive/2012/02_programm_2012/02_FilmdatenblI discovered art this cell has truly become a prison’.

« Filmmakers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani spent six months following rehearsals for this stage production; their film demonstrates how the universality of Shakespeare’s language helps the actors to understand their roles and immerse themselves in the bard’s interplay of friendship and betrayal, power, dishonesty and violence. This documentary does not dwell on the crimes these men have committed in their ‘real’ lives; rather, it draws parallels between this classical drama and the world of today, describes the commitment displayed by all those involved and shows how their personal hopes and fears also flow into the performance.

After the premiere the cell doors slam shut behind Caesar, Brutus and the others. These men all feel proud and strangely touched, as if the play has somehow revealed to them the depths of their own personal history ».

Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, 1976, 2h35 (a long passage will be shown)
